(Updated Fall 2013)
TVMTA Sonatina-Sonata Competition Guidelines
Set Guidelines (no voting necessary):
I. Purpose:
A. Provide student the opportunity to perform before a judge.
B. Receive a positive critique of his/her performance.
C. Compete with other students in an encouraging atmosphere.
II. Overview:
A. Eligible Students: Students of members of TVMTA in good standing are eligible to participate. Non-TVMTA members may also enter students without joining for their first year only, with an increased fees. If they wish to enter students in following years, they are required to join TVMTA. Participating students must be in high school or younger. Students must also be entered solely by the teacher that they actually take lessons from; TVMTA members (and non-members) may not enter students of other teachers under their own name.
B. Competition: The competition is divided into 15 levels with each level being represented by one sonatina or sonata movement selected from various composers and levels of difficulty. Students may enter just one level. Student performances are grouped by level with one judge per group. Levels in which enrollment is overly large will be divided into groups with a judge for each division. Schedules for judges contain students’ names and performance time only; teacher names of students are not available to the judges. Students are required to play their pieces by memory and present their music to the judge so they may be judged on the edition from which they learned.
Students will be assigned individual performance times for the preliminary round, which take place with a single student and adjudicator in a private studio. Parents and families are not permitted to observe the preliminary round, but must wait outside the door. No one is allowed to enter the private adjudication room except the performing student and the assigned door monitor. If students use a pedal extender or footstool, they must either be able to set it up themselves or the door monitor must be able to do it, quickly. Parents and teachers are not to approach the judges at any time during the competition with any concerns. Any issues can be taken to the competition chair. All participants will receive a ribbon following their preliminary performance.
Two students from each group will be chosen to perform in a final round called the Honors Recital, which is open to the public. First and second place winners are chosen based on their performance in the Honors Recital. Up to three additional students from each group may be chosen to receive Honorable Mention awards. Choosing students to perform at the Honors Recital or as Award Winners in the Honors Recital is at the discretion of the judges. Judges are given the option of not declaring a winner.
An awards ceremony will follow the final round. The first place winner receives a trophy and the second place winner receives a rosette ribbon.
C. Music: Music may not be photocopied. Music downloaded from the public domain (i.e. IMSLP) is acceptable as long as it is properly documented at the top of the first page where it was downloaded from. Music printed from a sheet music CD is also acceptable if properly documented on the top of the first page. All other music must be original. Scores should be marked with measure numbers at the beginning of each line.
D. Repeats and Ornamentation: Details on which pieces are acceptable to take repeats on can be found on the current repertoire list for the competition. Be sure to check the list. Judges will be made aware of which levels repeats are recommended on. Ornamentation and additional embellishments are acceptable on repeats. Judges will be made aware of this as well.
D. Results: Results will be posted within an hour of the preliminary round of each group. Results are posted in the lobby of the second floor of the Morrison Center. They will also be available on the TVMTA website. There may also be a number provided to call in for results.
E. Fees: Fees range from $17-$20 for TVMTA members, depending on the level of enrollment. Non-TVMTA members’ fees are $5 higher per student, and they will also pay a $15 (the cost of our local dues) registration fee.
F. Teacher Volunteering: All teachers who enter students into the competition must be available to help for at least a half-day on the day of the competition. (or through otherwise assigned committees) Make sure to check your preference for volunteering on the registration sheet. If you are unavailable the whole day, you must provide a substitute to come help in your place.
