2016 Sonatina EMAILS/Letters:
11-1-16 Email from Juli Draney re: Robin Wells McDonnell sonatina
Hi! I tend to drag tempos and so I called Robyn yesterday and asked her the desired "Allegro" tempo for her Sonatina in B-flat. She told me half note = 88-96 (felt in 2/2). She also iterated that she'd rather hear slower and cleaner than faster and less clean. I wanted to send that info out to our whole group. Thanks!

Dear Teachers,
I’m sending some last minute reminders. Please read carefully.
Door Monitors (and other volunteers): Volunteers, be courteous and be prompt to your meeting time, so you can be in place and ready as people arrive 15-20 minutes before their scheduled times. This event specifically requires teachers (or adults) as volunteers, because we handle competition performance nerves, emotions, and tempers that others are less likely to be experienced in. Your help in creating a positive competition environment is very important!
Food: Please sign up NOW to help with food--Food questions can go to Luann Fife, Hospitality Chair, at idahomusicacademy@juno.com. All teachers are expected to help.
Parking: We're including a copy of the Parking Permit.
Please park in the Brady Garage in front of the Morrison Center. You can print the free parking permit to place in your front window to be shared with the families in your studio:
Information for the day:
--Students please plan to arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled evaluation time.
--Students must stop at the front Registration Table to check-in, get their room number, and get a nametag with their competition ID number.
--Music must be memorized.
--Original music must be presented to the judge, measures clearly numbered. Music printed from the public domain should be properly documented on the front page.
--Students must make their scheduled evaluation time; no make-ups during a competition.
--Food/drink is allowed ONLY in the 3rd floor Student Lounge. Teachers might find this a useful place to meet students and share updates. Please instruct families to show the utmost respect to the Morrison Center facility. We are privileged to spend the day in this fine environment!
Results & Evaluations:
--We will post results throughout the day 1) on the first floor bulletin boards, 2) at www.treasurevalleymta.org and 3) on each teacher's schedule at www.treasurevalleymtaregistration.org -> Sonatina Competition -> 2016 Complete Results.
--Student evaluations will also be online on each teacher's schedule at www.treasurevalleymtaregistration.org -> Sonatina Competition -> Sonatina Reports (click 2016, generate reports). Please print these for your students.
--Finalists will perform / compete in a designated Honors Recital for the honors of first and second place. Honorable Mentions are invited to attend their designated recital to receive their rosette on stage (they will not perform). The recitals are at 4:30, 6:00, and 7:30 in C200 (2nd floor recital hall). They are free to the public and all are encouraged to attend to hear some beautiful performances! Finalists (at recital time) will line up on the main floor near the registration desk. Parents will proceed to the second floor recital hall entry.
Questions on volunteering can be directed to Vice Chair Bronwen Godfrey bgodfrey@cableone.net
Warm-ups: Students may try out the response on their piano with a brief exercise (ex: scale & chord progression). No excerpt from their piece, please. Students competing in the Final Round Honors Recitals will not try out the piano first. Students are expected to fully warm-up at home in both rounds.
If your students decide not to participate in Sonatina Competition, please notify me, Janet Folster, as soon as possible.
A quote from Nadine:
A few years ago I was monitoring outside one of the upper level competition rooms. A father listened intently through the door as his son performed, a small smile of pride on his face. He caught my eye and nodded, saying only, "Perseverance." The student took first place in his division.
What a great word to describe all of our hard work! Teachers, students, parents--it took perseverance to prepare for Sonatina Competition 2015 [now 2016]. I hope each of you is able to move forward into the next several days with pride and satisfaction in the musical growth, the discipline, and the new accomplishments of your students, your family, yourself!
Let's represent Treasure Valley Music Teachers Association well to the public by modeling professionalism and gracious competition on November 5. Wishing the best to your students!
Sincerely,
Janet Folster NCTM

The schedule is ready for viewing online.
Dear teachers,
The Sonatina Competition schedule is out and available for your viewing at:
http://treasurevalleymtaregistration.org/
After logging into your account, go to Sonatina Competition - 2016 Sonatina Student Schedule. All information is accessible there.
Please make sure you have signed up for a volunteer spot. If you are unable to volunteer, review the guidelines that state an "adult volunteer" must be substituted in your place. This competition is dependent on its competent and dependable volunteers. Teachers who do not serve in this way will not participate in future years.
Please also expect a food sign-up from our Hospitality chairman. Teachers will need to provide both help and food for the event.
More details will follow. Cancellations should be sent to Janet Folster jbfolster@gmail.com

Hi everyone - if you are teaching the Tsitsaros sonatina, the tempo marking seemed crazy to me so I emailed him. He said the tempo is indeed wrong. It should be 84-92. What a relief as the tempo printed was impossibly fast. Please mark your scores. I’m sure that Janet will also mark any scores the judge receives for example during the recitals.
A reminder that the Kevin Olson tempo was printed wrong as well. This was Level 1. We contacted him and he said 160 plus. Cross out the old tempo and write in the new. Have an awesome Saturday!

To teachers who entered students last year:
Important items from Andrea our webmaster:
I just wanted to give you a quick update on the Sonatina Registrations.
· We have 26 teachers that registered students last year that have not registered students yet this year.
· A reminder about Sonatina Registration closing Monday at 10 pm. My biggest concerns (because it happens every year) is that teachers will wait until the very last minute and then have problems (logging in, paying, membership status, etc).
· The teachers need to know that Andrea will NOT be available on Sunday to help them in any way with registration.
· Also Monday morning Andrea teaches piano from 8-11am. I (she) will NOT be available to help with anything during that time period either.
· The teachers really need to at least log in to the system today (Saturday) to make sure they can get in.
· I will be available tomorrow until about 11pm to assist with problems and then again on Monday morning from 5am-8am (not available 8-11am)
· Because we don’t allow LATE registration the teachers are going to need to think ahead and register soon so if there are issues they can be taken care of within the time frame I have to assist them.
FROM ANDREA:
· We have had some issues with Paypal. Heidi is working on it, but as of this point teachers need to pay for their students in groups of 10 or less until the problem is fixed. It may not be fixed before registration closes this year.
· Also a reminder as they are getting ready to finish registering students if they have TRANSFER students they need to email me BEFORE they add those students to the system. I have had SEVERAL teachers this year that are adding transfer students on their own which creates a duplicate in the system. I have to go in and merge those 2 records together. If they would email me first I can check and see if the student is in the system. If they are I can transfer their records. It will save them time because they won’t have to fill in all the information. They will just need to edit it if necessary. It will also give the teachers access to the transfer student’s previous evaluations and levels they have participated in. It will save me time as well. It’s a win-win situation if they will just email me first for transfer students.
Thanks a million for your attention.

Registration opens MONDAY September 12th.
Registration closes on MONDAY September 26th at 10 pm.
Proceed to the website for instructions.
Last year's letter from Nadine Reece was perfect. Please review.
Dear Teachers,
Greetings! Sonatina Competition registration opens next Monday: September 12 -- September 26. Registration is online through the Treasure Valley MTA webpage. You'll find clear instructions to register at:
http://www.treasurevalleymta.org/2016-online-sonatina-registration-information.html
PLEASE BE REMINDED: Automated registration means that it is next to impossible to correct mistakes once the information is submitted. Before finalizing your submission, DOUBLECHECK your information:
* Have you entered ALL of your participating students?
* Are their names spelled correctly?
* ARE THEY ENTERED ON THE CORRECT LEVEL?
* Did you note siblings?
Please be advised:
* There are no make-up days due to this event being a competition.
* No late registrations will be accepted.
* You must note your preference for a volunteer position. We will make every attempt to accommodate you but can't guarantee a position. Assignments will be made on a first come, first served basis.
* If you enter more students on a level than there is sublevels, your students will compete against each other. Example, if Level 9 only needs a 9A and 9B but you enter four students on Level 9, your students will compete against each other.
* We are making reasonable attempts to schedule siblings close together. "Reasonable" is defined as two hours or less between siblings. Larger families should understand that this day will be an investment and priority and should be prepared to manage it as such.
* Due to this event being a competition, we can't juggle performance times around to accommodate other extracurriculars.
Final round recitals will be at 4:30, 6:00, and 7:30pm. These recitals feature excellent, artistic playing and are a rich learning experience! Exhort your families to plan now to attend a recital.
We're looking forward to an excellent event that causes each of us to grow, and a day of beautiful music! Thank you for your cooperation and help; we look forward to seeing you November 5!

Your studio is invited to participate in our annual Sonatina Festival on Saturday, November 5 at BSU. Janet Folster is this year’s festival chairman. As she arranges for an adequate number of adjudicators for this important event, she would like an good idea of the number of participants this year. Would you take just a minute to count up your anticipated number of participants and send this information to jbfolster@gmail.com or kristierue@msn.com. Our sonatina committee could use bolstering. If you would be willing to serve on the sonatina committee, please contact Janet or Kristie asap.
