Newsletters & Group Emails will be posted here as we receive them.
TVMTA Teachers,
As of 6-30-2018 all TVMTA Memberships have expired. A few of you have paid your dues for MTNA/IMTA/TVMTA for 2018-2019. Thank you to those of you who have done that.
If you have not renewed your membership here is the link…. https://www.mtna.org/MTNA/JoinRenew/Renew/MTNA/JoinAndRenew/Membership/Renew_Membership.aspx?hkey=7c770b35-55dc-4648-98a8-d20ec16ff672
Please renew ASAP! It takes about a month to receive your information from MTNA saying that you have paid your membership fees so we can update our computer system. If you want to be listed on the website as a member (http://www.treasurevalleymta.org/member-directory.html) you will need to have your dues paid. If you plan to register students for Sonatina Competition 2018 you will need to have your membership fee paid so you don’t have to pay the non-member price.
Thank you!

TVMTA Members,
Thank you to those in attendance at the COA Follow Up Meeting. We appreciate the input via email from some of you who could not attend.
PROGRAM CHOICE:
The decision was made to move completely over to the “Certificate of Achievement” (Musicians West-Idaho) program for the 2019 COA
MAKE UP DAY:
The decision was made to keep Make Up Day at only ½ day. Those spot will be filled on a first-come first-serve basis. All other students that cannot participate on the original day will need to schedule a Path B. Starting with COA 2019 there will be an additional $20 fee charged to any student who chooses to use Make Up Day or Path B. This fee will be payable to TVMTA via Paypal before the student’s evaluation form will be available for the judge. Those students who choose Path B are also responsible for the additional judges fee to compensate that judge for their time. This is to be paid directly to the judge the day of their Path B evaluation. Those fees were set based upon the time needed per level to judge. Those fees are as follows….
Young Beginner-Level 2 = $6.00 (12 minutes)
Level 3-Level 5 = $10 (20 minutes)
Level 6-Level 7 = $15 (30 minutes)
Level 8-Level 9 = $17.50 (35 minutes)
Advanced = $20 (40 minutes)
FEES:
We anticipate that the fees for participation in Certificate of Achievement 2019 will remain the same. However, the theory test fees from Musicians West have not been set for COA 2019. Any changes to those costs may affect participation fees for COA 2019. Participation Fees will be listed on the website http://www.treasurevalleymta.org as soon as we have them.
COA 2018 Fees were:
Young Beginner---$28
Prep-Level 2---$32
Level 3-Level 5---$36
Level 6-Level 8---$42
Level 9-Advance---$50
MENTORS:
It was suggested that we start a list of Certificate of Achievement Mentors. These would be teachers that would be willing to have their name listed on the website http://www.treasurevalleymta.org as a mentor for any of the new TVMTA members who have questions. If you would be willing to become a mentor for COA please respond to this email and we will add your name and email address to the website.
VOLUNTEERS:
It was suggested that we look into using volunteer hours from local High School National Honor Society Students and also the BSU Collegiate Chapter Students to assist with volunteer hours at the Certificate of Achievement event. Teachers would still be required to provide ½ day volunteer slots based on the number of students they have registered, but we anticipate the number of volunteers they would need to provide would be reduced. Teachers will still be REQUIRED to fill a ½ day volunteer slot themselves to continue participating in COA. This event NEEDS teachers (not just other student/parent volunteers) to be able to continue running effectively. More information will be posted on the website http://www.treasurevalleymta.org as soon as we have that information available.
COA 2019:
The 2019 COA Committee is being finalized. As soon as we have those members contacted we will post them online. http://www.treasurevalleymta.org If you would like to be on the 2019 COA Committee please respond to this email. We would love to have you participate as a committee member.
We have tentative dates selected for COA 2019. As soon as those dates have been finalized they will be posted online. http://www.treasurevalleymta.org
It was decided that the 2019 COA Schedules need to be released sooner. To make this possible some of the other deadlines for registration, repertoire, & volunteers have also been moved to an earlier deadline for COA 2019. Those dates will be posted on the website as soon as they have been determined. http://www.treasurevalleymta.org
Thank you for your patience while we make these changes. We are looking forward to another great Certificate of Achievement event in 2019.

PROGRAM CHOICE:
The decision was made to move completely over to the “Certificate of Achievement” (Musicians West-Idaho) program for the 2019 COA
- We will follow their program and their online syllabus. If you have the California Syllabus you may choose to use it for your own reference, but we will not be using it as a TVMTA group.
- Andrea Hansen will post all links to the various syllabus sections online under 2019 COA as they become available. http://www.treasurevalleymta.org
- Repertoire Requirements (1 trophy point earned if average of repertoire scores is 6 or above)
- ~Young Beginner: One or two pieces by memory, 12 measures minimum, different composers, no arrangements, folk songs or hymns, no “required” list.
- ~Preparatory through Level 2: Two pieces by memory, different composers, one piece from suggested list.
- ~Level 3 through Level 5: Three pieces, at least two by memory, different composers, different time periods. One piece from suggested list.
- ~Level 6 through Level 10: Four pieces, at least two by memory, different composers, different time periods. One piece from suggested list.
- One of the pieces must come from the “Suggested Repertoire List”. This has some specific pieces, but also includes many anthologies. Suggestions start at Preparatory Level. http://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/86a25e_ccd30a1d82f44beaa56193420035f5c8.pdf
- Time periods….This section is still under discussion for composer classification & time periods. More information will be posted as soon as we have it.
- Repertoire length…Each level the student is registered for has a set number of minutes allowed for the judge to hear the student. All repertoire selected must be at the registered level or above. Repertoire cannot exceed the time limit set for each level. Judges will end the evaluation after the allotted time.
- Young Beginner-Level 2 Repertoire Max Length: 5 minutes
- Level 3-Level 5 Repertoire Max Length: 10 minutes
- Level 6-Level 7 Repertoire Max Length: 20 minutes
- Level 8-Level 9 Repertoire Max Length: 25 minutes
- Advanced/Level 10 Repertoire Max Length: 35 minutes including Etude
- Technique Requirements (1 trophy point earned if technique score is 6 or above)
- This link will give you the 2018 technique requirements. These are the requirements we will be using for COA 2019. DO NOT USE THE CALIFORNIA SYLLABUS! These are the requirements for COA 2019.
- Level 10 (Advanced Level)—It was decided that students will be required to play an Etude instead of the technique listed for Level 10.
- The Level 10 Etude must be approved by the COA 2019 Committee. Please send your Etude selection to COA Chair Emily Hanks emilyhank@yahoo.com to have it approved BEFORE your student begins working on the piece. A decision will be made by the COA Committee in less than 1 week.
- Theory Requirements (1 trophy point earned if theory/ear training score is 70% or higher)
- We are working with Musicians West to get a list of guidelines for what the theory requirements for each level will be. In the past students have been preparing for the theory tests using the Keith Snell Fundamentals of Theory books for each level (except for the Young Beginners). We will continue to use that as the guideline unless we hear something different from Musicians West. Young Beginner Requirements will include…identifying line & space notes, identifying high notes and low notes on a staff, steps & skips, the music alphabet, drawing notes including quarter, half, whole, dotted half, matching music symbols such as dynamics, tempo, bass clef, treble clef, staff, etc.
- You can purchase past tests to use as practice tests at the following link… http://musicianswestregister.com You will need to create a new account if you haven’t created one previously. Click on “Online Store” to purchase past tests.
- The theory test will include an Aural Skills portion. Here is the link to the Aural Skills syllabus… http://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/86a25e_f92ae0d79d3e4cb7a6623ab3526f5f01.pdf
- Examples of the Aural Skills Test are here… http://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/86a25e_64ce5ad040c3403b9614397e0c4091f1.pdf
- We realize that there have been some editing mistakes on the theory tests from Musicians West. We have compiled a list of mistakes from this year. Those will be sent to Musicians West to help with improvements in the future. Each year the editing mistakes have been less and less as we have submitted errors to them. We will continue to work with Musicians West in the future to continue to improve the quality of the theory tests.
- Sight Reading Requirements (1 trophy point earned if score is 6 or above)
- Sight reading will be required on ALL levels including the Young Beginner level starting COA 2019.
- Trophies will be given at 12 points, 24 points, 36 points, and a medal will be given for the Advanced/Level 10
- If you have any questions about the requirements for the Certificate of Achievement Program for 2019 please contact Emily Hanks emilyhanks@yahoo.com

To our Treasure Valley Music Teachers
Our 2017-18 school year is drawing to a close. This has been a busy and successful year - Sonatina Competition, Certificate of Achievement, 40-Piece Challenge. We are grateful for the chair people, committees and volunteers who have made these events happen. It is a monumental job to chair any of these events. If you have not served as chair, I don't think you can appreciate the number of hours they volunteer on behalf of our studios and our individual students. We owe them a huge vote of appreciation.
Bronwen Godfrey - Sonatina Competition (will chair 2018-19)
Emily Hanks - Certificate of Achievement (will chair 2018-19)
Monica Hughes - 40-Piece Challenge (will chair 2018-19)
Good news - these chair women will be at the helm again next year. Whew!
Additional good news - Monica Hughes who has served as our program chair for the past two years will be stepping into the shoes of TVMTA President as of July 1!!
Kristie Rue will function as immediate past president.
Suzy Clive will continue as our treasurer and registrar.
Reed Burkholder will step down as registrar. We appreciate his numerous years of service in this position.
Andrea Hansen will continue to serve as our web master.
Moving forward, we must fill a number of vacancies on our board.
- Secretary
- Program Chair (to work with various program Committees)
- Program Committees. We would like to return to the format of having individual committees plan and carry out specific chapter meetings/events such as the October Fall Social, December Holiday event, February guest presenter, May Celebration.
- Sonatina Selection chair
- Sonatina Selection committee
Filling these positions is not optional. It is necessary that we have membership participation in keeping our organization vibrant and successful.
Please complete the attached survey (link below) to help us determine what programs would most benefit you and your studio. Please indicate, as well, in which area you would be willing to serve in the 2018-2019 year. If everyone will take part, our organization will continue to grow, stay relevant and serve the needs of our music community. Please send response BEFORE June 1, to Monica Hughes (hughesmonica88@gmail.com) or Kristie Rue (kristierue@msn.com).
We would like to meet together to wrap up our year and officially "welcome" our new board. Please join with us!

Teachers,
The student schedules are finalized. Please take a look and make sure there are no mistakes.
Also, we are needing to make sure you get your volunteers lined up for Certificate of Achievement Day. Please get them entered by March 31 so we can begin assigning jobs. All volunteers are required to be AT LEAST 16 years old. Please log on to http://www.treasurevalleymtaregistration.org to enter your volunteers.
Remember that in order to help things run smoothly we need a half day volunteer for every 5 students entered. This means that if you have 11 you would need to find three half day volunteers. We are asking that every teacher have at least one of those volunteer slots be yourself. If you are a judge for that day, please find the needed number of volunteers in addition to judging since you will be compensated for your judging time. If you have been asked to volunteer in the theory, sight reading, or auditing room, that time counts as volunteer slot time. We appreciate your help in continuing to make this a great event for our students to participate in.
Thank you,
Emily Hanks

It is not too late to participate and involve your students! Please join the fun! This event is a great way to motivate your students.

Teachers,
I just wanted to let you know some details about this year’s Certificate of Achievement. We will be holding the event on April 14 at the Morrison Center at BSU. There are two options if your student will not be able to do the April 14 event. The first option is a make-up day on the 21st also held at the Morrison Center, but it is for limited use and as soon as it is full no other students will be permitted. The second option, if you are unable to make either of these dates or the 21st is full is Path B. Path B requires that you hire your own judge, but the deadline for it to be turned in is still the 28th. There also are extra fees involved. Path B should not be used because you think your student needs more preparation time. Please contact me as soon as possible to make arrangements for either make-up day or Path B.
Phase I – Registration & Payment will be open on January 15 and will close on January 30.
Phase II – You will be able to enter the repertoire from February 1-28.
The fees for this year have not gone up and will range from $28-$50 depending on the level. Here is a link for additional guidelines on the 2018 COA
Thank you,

Greetings!
Registration for the Sonatina Competition is open! All student registrations must be completed by September 30th. No late registration will be accepted. Do not wait until the 30th to register. If you encounter any issues you need assistance with, there may not be enough time to resolve them before registration closes. Please follow these instructions and complete all 5 steps to insure your students are able to participate.
Follow these steps to complete your registration.
- Go to http://www.treasurevalleymtaregistration.org/ and log in under the “Teacher Login”
- Once logged in, you can click on “Students” and add any students who are new to the registration system. VERY IMPORTANT…If you are adding a student, you must contact Andrea Hansen ahpianostudio@cableone.net and notify her of the new student BEFORE YOU REGISTER THEM. In your email, specify if your student is new to the event or a transfer student from another teacher.
- After adding new students to your student list, click on “Register Students” under the Sonatina Competition. Make sure you are not under the Certificate of Achievement section.
- Follow the instructions to register each student for the appropriate level. Make sure to double check your entries once you have completed this step. Proceed to payment.
- WAIT! You are not done yet. To COMPLETE registration you must enter you volunteer for the day of the competition. To do this, click on “Volunteer” all the way at the top of the list where you found Students. Clicking on “2017 Volunteer Schedule” under the Sonatina Competition is for later, after the volunteers have been assigned. For the Sonatina Competition each teacher must enter one half day volunteer. After you enter the name and contact information, you may also request a volunteer area. Make sure you select one of the Sonatina Competition options and not a Certificate of Achievement option. There is a box “Reason for Preference” where you can communicate with the volunteer coordinator. This would be an excellent place to request morning or afternoon volunteer times.
Thank you,
Bronwen Godfrey

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Why Do We Teach?
"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything." Plato
"To teach is to touch a life forever." Anonymous
How Do We Teach?
"Teach the student first, the music second and the piano third." Frances Clark
Both Marion Corron, gone way too soon, and our beloved Norma Jean Bauer, age 94, were outstanding examples of both the "Why We Teach" and the "How We Teach". We will truly miss these colleagues and their unique teaching attributes.
As members of MTNA/TVMTA we can "become better educators through networking, leadership, mentoring and educational opportunities." These were our thoughts as we put together our activities for the 2017-2018 year.
Here is an outline of what we have planned:
40-Piece Challenge.
This is a program that has been around for a number of years in many variations.
I know at least one of our Treasure Valley teachers has used an abbreviated version in her studio.
This year TVMTA is issuing the 40-Piece Challenge to you and your students - with a celebration to be held at the end of the year for all those who meet the challenge.
Look for a separate mailing with all the details.
September 22, 23 - IMTA 2017 State Conference. NNU. (Thanks to Tawna Love for the wonderful letter of encouragement sent 9/2/17.) Please come!!
Our Treasure Valley Chapter gather together for lunch during the Friday lunch break. 12:00-1:15 pm
We will meet in Room 222 of the Fine Arts Bldg.
We will order box lunches from NNU's catering department. $7.50.
Who's in?? Please RSVP to Kristie Rue (chapter president) or Monica Hughes (program chair 2017-2018) by September 10.
October 20 - Fall Social. 10:30 am. Program: How Do We Teach?
Guest panelists.

There will be no printed Membership Directory this year. Although we have loved all that Andrea Hubbard has done for us in the past by assembling and publishing a yearly directory, we feel that it is no longer necessary due to our outstanding website. Andrea, thank you so much for the years you have served us in this way.
I am excited for another year of possibilities! I know you are also.
Let's support one another as we go forward.
