Hi everyone,
The Sonatina Competition schedule is now available on the website. We tried to accommodate siblings, but it wasn't always possible due to certain levels' times. Teachers' students are also automatically evenly split between sublevel groups, if it all possible.
Please log in and enter your volunteer information if you have not already done so. Volunteer assignments will be determined soon.
Best,

Dear Teachers,
Greetings! I am very much looking forward to Sonatina Competition 2019, which will be held on November 9th at the Morrison Center at BSU. There have been a few changes for 2019, so please review the Sonatina Guidelines on the TVMTA website. Sonatina Competition registration will open Monday, September 23rd and must be completed by 11:59 pm on October 12th. There will be no late registration. For TVMTA teachers, MTNA, state and local membership dues must be paid before August 31st to avoid the higher non-member fee, so please pay your dues! All registrations after August 31st will be charged at the non-member rate.
You may register your students online at http://www.treasurevalleymtaregistration.org. Please enter your volunteer position preference at the same time you register your students.
I am so excited about our upcoming competition and look forward to seeing you there! Please email or text me if you have any questions.

Dear Colleagues,
It was necessary to make some changes to the Sonatina list of repertoire. I had not realized that Catnip Crazy was used last year! Therefore we needed to rethink. The changes which are now corrected on our website are as follows:
Level 1 - Cloudy Waltz by Reed Burkholder
Level 2 - Festival Sonatina , first movement, by Mary Leaf
Level 3 - Minuet from Sonata in C by Haydn (moved up from level 2)
Janet of Dunkleys has ordered music that was not readily available in the store. I will bring my music from the list to the meeting tomorrow.
I look forward to seeing you.

Hi everyone,
Our Sonatina List for 2019 is now posted on our website. I am very excited about the repertoire choices. Below is a note from Halimah Brugger, our Sonatina Repertoire Selection Chair. I want to thank her for her excellent work. Please read and note the changes for this year.
One important change is that there will be two choices of piece for Levels 10 through 15. Champions will be chosen from students entered in each level regardless of which piece they choose. For example, both champions in Level 10 could be playing the 'Olson' piece or one could be playing 'Olson' and one could be playing 'Joplin'. Students will be competing against other students playing either piece within that same level."
I am looking forward to an exciting and successful event in November. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or would like to help with our event.
Thank you and have a great summer!

From Halimah Brugger:
The Sonatina List for 2019 is now out.
I made the list with the hope of involving more students and more teachers. The music for the most part is very easy to obtain. The small group of teachers who got together at Irina's house about a month ago decided that we should widen the repertoire to include music other than sonatinas/sonatas. Levels 1, 2, 7, 10, 11 and 12 are not sonatas. I couldn't completely separate myself from the sonatina format. We can decide next year how it works.
There are two pieces for each level, 10-15. This is also a new idea. I selected pieces that are stylistically different for each of these levels. The goal is to engage more students to find pieces that fit their strengths. In levels 5 and 9, I have indicated that students may choose to play either of the two movements listed.
My thanks to Suzy Clive, Amy Audas and Irina Albig for their help in suggesting repertoire.
Halimah Brugger
PS If you notice any errors or have concerns, please let me know.

Sonatina Competition Committee Meeting
Saturday March 30, 2019, 4 pm
Home of Irina Albig
Present: Amy Audas, Halimah Brugger, Bronwen Godfrey, Irina Albig, Suzy Clive
Amy Audas will be the Chair of Sonatina Competition for 2019.
The following decisions were made, after extensive debate and discussion, by unanimous committee vote, and with extensive guidance from Monica Hughes' TVMTA Survey of our group opinion on trying some new things with the program:
2 “Sonatina Champions” will be named in each level/group, and both are invited to play in the evening recitals. Evening recitals will be non-competitive. Both students will receive a trophy. Honorable Mention awardees will receive a red rosette ribbon and will be honored at the recitals as before.
Pieces will not be limited to classical repertoire or sonatinas exclusively (so we can explore some Baroque and Romantic, etc. pieces as well)
We will keep 15 levels, but give students on levels 10-15 two possible choices of piece.
OTHER ASSIGNMENTS MADE
Halimah was named as Sonatina Repertoire Selection Chair for 2019. The goal for list completion is May 1, 2019. Halimah will also take care of obtaining our parking pass for the event.
Bronwen will work the Audit Room the day of the event, and arrange the ribbons and trophies on the table.
Irina will work backstage and onstage helping to hand out the awards.
Monica Hughes or Irina will Emcee the recitals.
Luann Fife will serve as Hospitality Chair.
Suzy will invite judges and arrange for communication, accommodations and payment.
Amy will work on the schedule in consultation with her daughter, Grace. Amy will also work on getting the venue reserved. Amy will order trophies and ribbons at least 3 weeks before the event.
Tawna Love will schedule Volunteers. Reminder from Bronwen to withhold everyone's schedule until everyone provides the names of their volunteers.
TOPICS DISCUSSED AND TABLED FOR NOW:
Topics discussed but “tabled” for now: providing 2 pieces for every level to choose from; allowing some of the levels to be open to have an audience in the preliminary round; changing to only 10 levels
The meeting was adjourned. No subsequent meeting was planned, however communication via email will be our means of coordination at this point.
