2019 Treasure Valley Music Festival EMAILS/Letters:
3-8-19
Members of Treasure Valley Music Teachers Association.
This year our TVMTA will take a break from the Sonatina Competition and create a fresh new music experience for our students. The Sonatina Competition has served our music community for the past 20+ years. However, participation has been declining over the last few years. Some elements of the competition have become less popular - more controversial. Even though there are teachers and students who desire the tradition of the November Sonatina Competition to continue unchanged, there are equally as many teachers and students who are intrigued by the possibilities of “something new, something different”.
A committee was formed to contemplate what “something new, something different” might look like. Ideas were seriously debated. Here is an outline of the program we propose to implement in November of 2019. This will take the place of our chapter’s 2019 Sonatina Competition.
Treasure Valley Music Festival - 2019
Music from the Romantic and Baroque Periods
Students may elect to perform one or two pieces in a small recital setting.
Family members and other interested parties are encouraged to attend.
Students age 0-12 years are allotted 5 minutes of performance time.
Students over age 12 are allotted 7 minutes of performance time.
Students may perform solo pieces or in ensemble.
A highly qualified adjudicator will preside over the recital.
The adjudicator will make oral comments immediately following each student’s performance. These oral comments will make note of positive aspects of the performance and may include suggestions for practice or performance.
Students will not be judged in comparison with other students, but rather against a “standard of excellence”. At the conclusion of the recital the adjudicator will be given private time to award one of three performance degrees to each student: Outstanding Achievement, Honorable Mention or Participation. Medallions reflecting those awards will be attached to previously prepared certificates for each student. These certificates will be professionally rendered and will be perfect for framing.
Certificates will be presented to students by their teacher at a time he/she determines best.
