Requirements:
Sonatina Competition 2020 will be by video recording. Students/parents will upload student videos to YouTube in unlisted mode. Teachers will add links to the video recordings by editing their student record on the TVMTA registration page.
- Students/parents must upload student video recordings to YouTube, and links to the student recordings must be added by teachers to student registrations by November 9th. Teachers may not upload student videos to YouTube themselves. They must have the student or parent to do, and the student or parent may not mention the teacher’s name anywhere in the video itself or in the video description.
- Original music should be shown at the beginning of the student recording.
- Adjudication will occur on November 14th, with final results to be completed, posted and winners notified within a few days.
Competition:
- The competition is divided into 15 piano solo levels of increasing difficulty, with two choices of piece for each level.
- Pieces are not limited to classical repertoire or sonatinas/sonatas.
- All music is to be performed by memory.
- Students may only enter just one level/event and are not required to advance from the previous year’s level.
- Levels with large registrations are divided into sublevels, and each group is judged individually. Levels 11-15 will be capped at ten students in a group. Other levels are capped at about 15 students.
- Adjudicators work as objectively as possible without information of the students’ teacher names, ages or grades of students, etc. Teachers are admonished to not approach/contact the judges regarding specific students’ performance.
- Students must show their original music at the beginning of their video recordings.
- First and second place winners from each group will be chosen, and up to three additional students from each group may be chosen to receive Honorable Mention awards.
Results:
- Results will be completed and posted on the TVMTA website within a few days of the November 14th judging. Alternate posting will be communicated to the participating teachers via email. Teachers will pass that communication on to the parents and students.
Honors Recital:

Awards:
- First and Second Place winners from each group will be awarded trophies, and Honorable Mentions (up to three per sublevel) will be awarded red rosette ribbons. Trophies and ribbons will be distributed to teachers to give to their students.
